Advanced Certified Clinical Trauma Specialist in Addiction (ACCTS-A)

Certification Course Description

The Advanced Certified Clinical Trauma Specialist in Addiction (ACCTS-A) certification is designed for professionals who already possess foundational knowledge in trauma and addiction as well as understanding the Salutogenic approach to trauma and addiction treatment modalities. This advanced certification enhances that base with additional skills and tools specifically aimed at facilitating Addiction treatment and recovery.

This certification acknowledges the nuanced differences in treating trauma and addiction. A key focus is on understanding how to apply the Salutogenic asset-focused approach to provide effective are to those who suffer from substance and/or process addictions coupled with a history of trauma. The Advanced Certified Clinical Trauma Specialist in Addiction (ACCTS-A) certification curriculum addresses the complexities that arise in therapy with clients who have experienced repeated relational violations, including issues with trust, boundary violations, and early attachment-related challenges that have exacerbated addictive behaviors and thinking.

Please Note: This certification does not include the course. The course must be purchased separately.

Prerequisites for this certification are:

  • CCTS-A Certified Clinical Trauma Specialist for Addiction (or)
  • CCTS-I Certified Clinical Trauma Specialist for Individuals (plus) the CCTS-F Certified Clinical Trauma Specialist for family.

Purpose

The ACCTS-A aims to equip professionals with the knowledge and skills to assess, implement effective treatment approaches, and navigate the therapeutic complexities of treating substance and/or process addiction coupled with a trauma learning history.

Professional Standards

Applicants must be state or nationally licensed (or equivalent for non-U.S. practitioners) in one of the following fields:
- Psychologist
- Clinical Social Worker
- Licensed Professional Counselor
- Marriage and Family Therapist
- Licensed master’s level addiction counselor
- Psychiatrist
- Psychiatric Nurse

Educational Standards

Prerequisites for Certification:

  • Completion of CCTS-A Certified Clinical Trauma Specialist for Addiction in the 12 months prior to application (or)
  • Completion of CCTS-I Certified Clinical Trauma Specialist for Individuals (plus) the CCTS-F Certified Clinical Trauma Specialist for family in the 12 months prior to application.
  • A minimum of a master’s degree in a mental health-related field, medicine, addiction (or equivalent for non-U.S. practitioners).
  • At least 3 years of clinical experience post-licensing (or equivalent for non-U.S. practitioners).

Required Documentation for Certification Eligibility

  • A copy of the candidate’s license (if in the U.S.).
  • Proof of completed training as per the Educational Standards.
  • Complete application form
  • Payment of the certification application fee.
